21.12.2022: Jowhar, Middle Shabelle

The Ministry of Information announced this week that four senior Al-Shabab members including a commander of a militant armed faction have surrendered to Somali National Army (SNA) in the Middle Shabelle region of Hirshabelle State.

In a statement released to the public, the Ministry stated that the Mohamed Ali Hassan also known as Ma’alin Hudeyfa alongside three other senior Al-Shabab officials surrendered, albeit the names of the other three are yet to be released. Somali media and sources close to Horumar indicate that one of those apprehended was Abdi Hassan Ibrahim who was reportedly Al-Shabab’s transportation coordinator in the region.

The statement continued that that Mr Hassan served as a commander of an Al-Shabab cell based in the Middle Jubba region which was recently defeated in ensuing battles unfolding in the Middle Shabelle region. It is believed that this cell was part a series of reinforcement sent by Al-Shabab from their stronghold in Middle Jubba to counter the mounting pressure from the Somali Government and local resistance to no avail.

Additionally, the Federal Government reported the surrender of Said Raage, a traditional elder of a local clan that was previously serving with Al-Shabab prior to the four senior commanders.

The National Army have warmly welcomed the defectors and the Somali Government is committed to care for all defectors that renounce extremist ideology and its abhorrent acts.
